The question

A nurse is providing discharge teaching to a patient who has just been prescribed levothyroxine (Synthroid) for newly diagnosed hypothyroidism. The patient asks why it is important to continue taking the medication even after feeling better. Which explanation best describes why lifelong therapy is necessary?

  1. Hypothyroidism is a chronic condition in which the thyroid cannot produce sufficient hormone on its own, so replacement therapy must continue indefinitely to maintain normal function.
  2. Once symptoms resolve, levothyroxine can be safely tapered and eventually discontinued without consequence.
  3. The medication gradually restores the thyroid gland's ability to produce its own hormone, and stopping early prevents this regeneration from completing.
  4. Levothyroxine prevents the immune system from attacking other endocrine glands, so stopping it causes autoimmune disease.
