The question

A nurse is preparing to perform a sterile dressing change on a postoperative abdominal surgical wound. After opening the sterile field on the overbed table, the nurse reaches across the sterile field to pick up sterile gloves from the far side of the table. What action should the nurse take next?

  1. Continue with the dressing change as planned since the gloves are sterile
  2. Discard the contaminated field and prepare a new sterile field
  3. Clean the sterile field with antiseptic solution and continue
  4. Move the sterile items to a new location and proceed with the procedure
