The question

The parents of a 9-month-old infant ask the nurse at a well-child visit what developmental milestones they should expect their child to achieve over the next 3 months. The infant currently sits without support, babbles, and transfers objects between hands. Which response by the nurse is most accurate regarding expected development by 12 months of age?

  1. Your baby should be able to pull to stand, say 'mama' or 'dada' with meaning, and wave bye-bye.
  2. Your baby should be walking up stairs and pointing to body parts when asked by 12 months.
  3. Your baby should begin to walk independently and speak in 2-word phrases by 12 months.
  4. Your baby should be stacking 2-3 blocks and using a spoon independently by 12 months.
