NCLEX-PN® question of the day

The question

A 32-year-old resident with Guillain-Barré syndrome cannot bear weight. His current assessed transfer plan requires a full-body mechanical lift. An LPN/VN and trained assistant are preparing a bed-to-wheelchair transfer; the wheelchair brakes are unlocked and the suitable lift is nearby. The resident is anxious about falling. Which plan should they use?

  1. Lift him under the arms using a two-person carry.
  2. Begin lowering him into the wheelchair, then lock its brakes once he is seated.
  3. Explain the transfer, secure the bed and wheelchair, and use the prescribed lift and sling with trained help according to manufacturer instructions.
  4. Have him hold the nurse’s neck while the nurse bends and twists toward the chair.
